Lucas Family Christmas Letter - 2006

“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.”

Merry Christmas Everyone!
“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go…” That’s right; it’s that time of year once again. Another year has come and gone once again. We hope this letter finds all of you healthy, happy and enjoying life each and every day.
Erin still lives in Lethbridge. She loves it there – her job, her friends, her house. She has a very nice life set up for herself in Alberta. Erin is still talking for a living. She continues to be a very popular radio personality. In fact her station is now number one in the city and Erin has the number one nighttime show. Erin is starting to look at other job opportunities but has not settled on the “perfect” one yet. She keeps her eyes and ears open as she searches for her next step in her career. Erin got her sixth (yes, I said sixth) tattoo this year. AND she also had her lip pierced. What’s a weary mother to do? Other Erin news includes she spent 2006 as a single girl. And that’s all she wants said about that. Erin lost a cat, got another cat, got another cat after that, and then lost that cat. Enough cats Erin! Erin has found a very good buddy in Lethbridge. What started out as casual dating has turned into a true friendship for Erin. Cameron is tall and quiet but he has proven himself (so far) to be a solid friend.
Sean finished her second semester in Medicine Hat in the SLP Assistant program. By the time it was May, Sean realized that this wasn’t going to be the career for her. Sean applied for a couple of other programs and in the meantime moved to Lethbridge to live with Erin and work in that city for the summer. By fall she had decided to not move back to Medicine Hat. Sean works for Upland Cellars – a Sobey’s liquor store. She is an assistant manager. Recently she became one of the first people in the province to pass the Alberta Servers Certificate. Way to go Sean! Sean hasn’t quite made up her mind about school for January. She applied and was accepted to the Social Worker course in Lethbridge but is now having second thoughts. She may take a class or two or then again she may not. Sean got her lip pierced too (another mom weary sigh) but had to take it out recently because it got infected. (A huge sarcastic “Awww”).
Lyle is Lyle. He says nothing has changed with him. He is still thinking and working and working and thinking out in that old garage. He had some troubles with his knee this summer but trips to a physical therapist were successful in relieving the ache. Lyle still plans to try to make a stainless steel knife. He is making the preparations to start on his first one on his holidays between Christmas and New Year. Good luck Lyle!
Denise saw a couple of changes this year. In June she finished working at Watrous Elementary School. Although she was successful in obtaining a full-time position at the high school she was still sad to leave the school and its staff and students. Denise loves working at the high school. The staff is great and she really feels like part of a team. She works with some very special students, spending most of her day in grade Eight and Grade Nine. Denise continued to seek out personal and professional development for herself, travelling to workshops and conferences in various locations.
Denise’s entire family gathered in Canmore, Alberta in May for her nephew’s wedding. It was great to see everyone and spend the time together in such a beautiful place. Denise’s Dad became a long-term resident in the health care system in February. He had to be placed in Wynyard until an opening was available in Watrous, but finally in July he was moved home to Manitou Lodge. Her dad looks forward to visitors and still remains as stubborn as ever.
Here’s one for “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” – Lyle and Denise took in another dog. They still don’t have a dog of their own but Sean and Erin’s dogs have some very nice accommodations at 312 3rd Ave. East. Erin’s large dog, Rusty needed a new place to hang his hat so Denise and Lyle took the big lug in. “The boys” as they are affectionately referred to, are great pets. The dogs keep Lyle busy with daily truck rides and runs in the country. Lyle has been working with Rusty, teaching him some tricks. Lyle is quite the “dog whisperer”. Rusty is a borderline average student at best. Toby can’t figure out why it takes Rusty so long to lay down when he has already, sat, laid down, rolled over, barked and danced on his hind legs - TWICE. Just give me the darn treat already. The house is a little crowded and quite hairy, but never without a dull moment it seems.
The year went by so fast. A camping trip and visits to Lethbridge kept the car on the road but maybe a bit too much because costly car repairs were also dealt with too.
Lyle and Denise’s good friend and dear neighbour, Jean Baker turned 90 this fall. They are so fortunate to have such a wonderful lady living right next door.
And that it seems was 2006 for the Lucas’s. Once again we invite each and every one of you to come and see us when you are in the neighbourhood. Our door is always open and you are always welcome.
The joy of brightening other lives, bearing each others' burdens, easing other's loads and replacing empty hearts and lives with generous gifts becomes for each of us the meaning of Christmas.
“Christmas! The very word brings joy to our hearts. No matter how we may dread the rush, the long Christmas lists for gifts and cards to be bought and given - -when Christmas Day comes there is still the same warm feeling we had as children, the same warmth that enfolds our hearts and our homes.”

Merry Christmas!

Best Wishes for the Season and all through the New Year!
